An Introduction to the doctoral programme "Molecular Biosciences"

The goal of molecular biosciences is to understand the central biological processes and systems, their biochemical pathways and their regulation at the molecular level. The findings from this field of research form the basis for deciphering the mechanisms that determine the cellular functions of biological systems, and are used in a wide range of applications in medicine and biotechnology. The areas comprising the "Molecular Biosciences" doctoral programme range from organic chemistry to biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, all the way to biotechnology.

Profile-building research focus

At the University of Bayreuth, the molecular biosciences form a profile-building research focus. The doctoral programme is mainly supported by the members of the Bayreuth Center for Molecular Biosciences (BZMB) and the Research Center for Bio-Macromolecules (bio-mac). It is networked with the Master's programmes in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Molecular Ecology, and Natural and Drug Chemistry.

Objectives

The aim of the "Molecular Biosciences" doctoral programme is to provide young scientists with an excellent education that enables them to contribute creatively to the further development of scientific concepts and to pursue competitive careers in the molecular biosciences. In addition, the doctoral programme offers interdisciplinary training through research and the promotion of interdisciplinary competencies.

Independent research and scientific communication

The scientific work on the research project itself forms the core of the doctoral training. During their doctoral studies, each doctoral candidate is accompanied by a mentoring committee consisting of three scientists. At the beginning of the doctoral programme, the doctoral candidate develops a research plan that presents the thesis project and is discussed and further developed with his or her mentoring committee. Annual interim reports serve to regularly evaluate and optimise the progress of the research project. In addition, each doctoral candidate completes an individual training programme that is optimally geared towards the specific skills and needs of the doctoral candidate, and to the requirements of the scientific doctoral project. This includes participation in group and literature seminars, student symposia, summer schools, and contribution to teaching. In addition, the doctoral candidates should present their research results at scientific conferences and participate in writing of publications. This programme enables doctoral students to carry out independent research and scientific communication, and serves as an ideal basis for making responsible contributions in education, research, industry and society.
